No Spark for Washington in 24-10 loss

On the day that the Commanders unveiled a new mascot, Major Tuddy, they instead produced what can only be described as a major turd.

Later tonight, a Green Bay win vs the Vikings will officially end the Washington season. But, after this successive FedEx loss, it already seems the nail is in the coffin for 2022.

Head Coach Ron Rivera turned to his $28m off-season acquisition, Carson Wentz, under centre and it ended in a 24-10 loss vs the Browns.

It was said to be a necessary spark to secure play-off football, but one tremendous drive aside, Wentz was bad again. Throwing three INTs overall and being booed by the home crowd within the first quarter; we won’t be seeing Carson in burgundy & gold again.

Not even stubborn Rivera could attempt to resign Carson after that performance and FedEx reaction.

Will this failure to provide the Commanders with an effective QB, and, just as importantly, an effective OL, be the end of the road too for Rivera? For a more stable organisation, the answer would be yes with three seasons of what is likely now a losing record.

The Commanders, however, will soon be in an ownership takeover situation and much will depend on how quickly a sale is made as to whether coaching and front office changes are made.

My thoughts are clear: as a new owner I would be a) turning to as many experienced advisors as possible and b) undoing the vast majority of decisions that were made by Daniel Snyder.

That should include everyone in the building being on the hot seat.

To try and end this quick-fire blog on a positive note then. New ownership after years of scandal, amateur antics, and losses, that is the best result that the franchise has had in some time.

There are some young guys on the roster to keep building around, with the roster gaps obvious and glaring that can be addressed in free agency, with Washington likely to be a more desirable destination post-Dan, and the Commanders are not shy of picks in the 2023 draft.

It might seem despondent right now, but soon they’ll be a new era in D.C, but will it include Ron Rivera?

I wouldn’t be so sure.
