Let's Go Deebo

The Washington Commanders enter free agency with a healthy salary cap to spend, but this is partly negated with the need to fill a roster that had many a player on one-year contracts. With that in mind, expect to see some of the 2024 gang back in town.

However, there was a big splash last week with the trade for San Francisco WR Deebo Samuel. Costing just a fifth rounder, the Commanders will take on his $17.46 million salary-cap charge.

Here at UKHTTC, we took time out with Paul Hope, a huge 49ers fan in the UK & host of the @49erFaithfulUK podcast to talk about Deebo and his time in San Francisco. Will Samual be a good fit for the Commanders?

Asking the questions is UKHTTC founder, Christian Burt.

UKHTTC: What do you expect the fit for Deebo would be in Washington’s system more of a Swiss Army knife with lots of screens or an outside Receiver WR2 to Terry McLaurin's WR1?

Paul: Deebo Samuel would likely be a fantastic fit in Washington's system, but I do feel it is a matter of how they decide to utilize his versatile skill set.

Given the current makeup of the Washington offense, Deebo could definitely serve as you have said, in the "Swiss Army knife" role that he's excelled in previously with the 49ers.

Washington, like San Francisco, could use him in motion pre-snap, on jet sweeps, and in creative screen game designs to get the ball in his hands quickly. Deebo’s ability to break tackles and make plays after the catch would fit seamlessly into Washington’s need for playmakers who can add yards in creative ways.

That being said, I could also see Deebo being utilized as an outside WR2 alongside Terry McLaurin (WR1). McLaurin has shown he can handle the top defensive attention, and adding Deebo’s versatility to your offence would provide a great balance. Samuel could also be used as a dynamic route runner who can take advantage of matchups on the outside, whilst at the same time still playing a big role in the short-to-intermediate game.

It ultimately depends on the offensive philosophy of the Commanders coaching staff and whether they want to build their scheme around Deebo’s versatility like what we (the 49ers) did or use him more traditionally as a secondary receiver. Both options are viable, but personally, I'd lean toward a hybrid role, using him in both ways to maximize his talents.

Now and then there seem to be slight 'Diva' accusations. Justified or nonsense?

The "Diva" accusations surrounding Deebo Samuel are a bit of a mixed bag.

On the one hand, it’s clear that Deebo is a passionate player who clearly wants to get paid AND be recognized for his unique skill set.

On the other hand, it’s easy for certain moments or behaviours to get blown out of proportion in the media, especially when a player is as high-profile as Deebo.

Obviously during his contract dispute in 2022, he didn’t cover himself in glory & he did take to social media to voice his frustrations, However outside of these Deebo has largely maintained a fairly down-to-earth, team-first approach. He's known to be a fiery competitor and someone who plays with a lot of emotion, but that doesn't necessarily make him a "diva." Many of the accusations could be more about misinterpreting a player's passion and drive for selfishness.

At the end of the day, it probably says more about his strong personality, his desire for fair treatment, and his competitiveness rather than be considered as actual "diva" behaviour. I mean, it’s not unusual for star players in the NFL to express their frustrations or want to make sure they’re being treated well, especially in a sport where longevity and injury risk are high.

Basically to sum up: the accusations aren’t entirely unjustified as such, but what I would say is they are likely exaggerated but certainly don’t capture the full picture of who Deebo Samuel is as a player and person. In my opinion, Deebo is a passionate, driven guy who wants to be recognized for his contributions—and I think that's something we can all relate to!

Deebo had faced multiple injuries (e.g., hamstring, ankle), raising some durability questions. Can he stay healthy considering he is physical guy who has taken shots over the years due to that style?

Deebo Samuel's injury history, especially considering his physical playing style, does raise some valid concerns about his long-term durability.

He's a player who thrives on making explosive plays both as a receiver and as a running back, which naturally exposes him to more wear and tear. Deebo’s style of play, being tough, physical, and fearless certainly brings the risk of injury.

His ability to break tackles, fight for extra yards, and lower his shoulder to power through defenders has made him a dynamic playmaker, but it's also put him in harm’s way, however that’s the nature of how he plays the game. While he’s missed games here and there, it’s not as if he’s been out for full seasons.

He has dealt with some lingering injuries, particularly hamstrings and ankle problems, which are unfortunately common for NFL players who rely on speed, agility, and burst.

One way to potentially keep Deebo healthier is by limiting his running back workload. While his versatility is a huge asset, overuse in the backfield increases his injury risk.

If the Commanders were to focus on him primarily as a receiver and reduce his carries, it could help preserve his body. This is something that the 49ers did start to do (to scale back on his running back usage) to prevent further wear and tear, which was probably a smart move, but had an impact on his play.

Deebo Samuel’s injury history and physical style of play are definitely concerns, but they aren’t necessarily a death sentence for his career. The key for Deebo's longevity may be workload management, getting the right kind of recovery treatment, and perhaps reducing his running back role to help limit injuries. He’s shown the ability to bounce back from injuries, but the physicality of his game will always put him at risk.

Ultimately, it’s a balancing act: if Deebo continues to be used creatively but not overworked, there’s a good chance he can stay healthy, but unfortunately the risk will always be there because of how dynamic and physical he is.

Route running is seen as average with Deebo. Is that a slight overreaction when he is 'good enough' to run polished routes?

I think the notion that Deebo Samuel's route running is "average" can be somewhat of an overreaction when you take a closer look at his game.

Whilst it’s true Deebo is not the most technically polished route runner in the league (for example he doesn't have the pristine, precise routes of someone like a Cooper Kupp or Stefon Diggs, who have built their games around crisp, refined route running) that doesn’t mean Deebo's route running is "bad" or something to overlook, either.

Deebo’s usage in San Francisco was always more about how he was used rather than how he runs his routes. A lot of his success came from his ability to get open in space, his strength after the catch, and his versatility. In terms of pure route running, he doesn't run the entire route tree as crisply as some of the league’s elite receivers, but then he doesn't necessarily need to in the role he fills.

He’s used in a lot of quick-hitting plays, screens, jet sweeps, and even on handoffs, where the need for elite route running is less critical. Deebo's real strength has always been his ability to win after the catch. His vision, acceleration, and strength in the open field are his defining traits. He can turn a simple screen or short route into a big play, and his physicality allows him to make defenders miss. Because of this, he doesn't always need to run the sharpest or most polished routes.

He can leverage his physicality and playmaking ability to make up for less-than-perfect technique.

While his route running might not be on the level of someone like a route technician, Deebo’s routes are still good enough for him to create separation and be effective in the offense. He may not be a technician with subtle head fakes or ultra-smooth cuts, but he can still execute a lot of different routes—whether it's quick slants, deep balls, or even comeback routes.

His ability to use his physicality to get open and his explosiveness after the catch makes up for any technical shortcomings.

Deebo has shown growth as a route runner over the years. Early in his career, he was more of a "get-the-ball-in-his-hands" player, but as he’s matured, his ability to run more polished routes has improved.

If he were in a system that demanded more precise route running (like in a system that relies on deep, methodical passing plays), he could probably develop those skills further. But even in his current role, he’s still been highly effective and efficient, making plays regardless of whether his routes are ultra-refined.

What I would say to you (Washington fans) is to remember, route running is just one part of a wide receiver's game. What Deebo excels at most is creating mismatches with his strength, speed, and physicality. In a way, his style of play is more about making defenders miss or overpowering them rather than “out-technique” them in the way more finesse-based receivers do.

This doesn't make his route running "bad," it just means his game is different from a traditional route-running specialist.

A Deebo on fire is different in how he wins, making him a dynamic weapon despite not fitting the traditional mold of a polished route runner and more of a wide-back (to quote Deebo himself!).

Is there a weight issue as we hear Samuel balloons up in the off season?

It has been reported that Deebo has shown up to training camp in less-than-ideal shape, with some media outlets mentioning that he looked a little heavier than expected after the offseason.

This led to concerns that his weight might affect his performance or longevity, given his physical style of play. However, it’s not uncommon for players, especially ones who rely on their strength and physicality like Deebo, to gain weight during the offseason. Many players use the off time to bulk up a little bit to improve strength, power, or just enjoy some rest from the grind of the season.

The challenge is that Deebo plays in such a dynamic role that it’s crucial he doesn’t carry too much extra weight, as it could hinder his explosiveness and agility.

The 49ers have been mindful of Deebo’s conditioning, and after some offseason weight concerns in the past, he’s had the chance to adjust and focus on getting back into shape before the regular season. It seems like the coaching staff has been proactive about keeping him on track when it comes to his weight, particularly since they rely heavily on his versatility and physicality.

Another thing to consider is Deebo’s mentality. Players like him, who are so physically gifted sometimes require a bit more motivation during the offseason to stay locked in. In seasons when Deebo’s been highly motivated, he’s been in great shape and has performed at a high level.

But when his focus wavers a bit or there’s uncertainty about his role or contract (which could be a concern for Washington as Deebo looks for his next deal) that might lead to moments where his conditioning isn’t quite where it needs to be. While Deebo's offseason weight gain might be a concern, it's not necessarily a huge red flag.

Most of the time, players can get back into playing shape quickly with proper training and conditioning. As long as Deebo stays focused on maintaining his physicality while keeping his weight in check, it’s a manageable issue. That said, if he continues to show up for training camp or the season with noticeable weight fluctuations that affect his performance, it could become a more serious long-term concern.

Who do you feel won this trade?

The 49ers. Plain and simple.

He simply isn’t “The Deebo Samuel (one of one)” that he was & the fact the 49ers are willing to eat $31 million in dead money with this trade (after restructuring his contract last year) in the final year of his deal is very telling.

Add to the fact he will also want a new deal (soon), he isn’t getting any younger & we let him leave for a 5th round pick (Crikey we even got a 4th from Dallas for Trey Lance!) sadly, this trade reflects that Deebo is not the player once was and a change in team building philosophy from San Francisco.

What will Washington fans love about Deebo?

Washington fans will love Deebo Samuel for his versatility, physicality, explosive playmaking ability, and clutch performances (especially against Dallas & the Eagles).

His mentality and leadership will definitely add a spark to Washington’s offense, and his big-play potential should be something Washington fans eagerly look forward to every week. Pairing him with Terry McLaurin (one of my favourite players in the league) should create one of the most exciting wide receiver duos in the league.

Terry McLaurin has been your top receiving threat for years, so pairing him with Deebo, this will see McLaurin drawing the top coverage, meaning Deebo would be free to exploit mismatches.

Washington fans will quickly fall in love with this dynamic duo as both will keep defenses on their toes. This move should also give your offense more balance, as Deebo's ability to line up in the backfield should give McLaurin more opportunities to make plays downfield.

Deebo’s intensity and fire on the field will certainly resonate with Washington fans, who often appreciate players who show passion and leadership. His energy is contagious, and he’s the type of player who definitely leads by example.

His toughness, both physically and mentally, will make him a fan favourite especially as he is someone who always gives his all on every play.

Oh and hope you are ready for the BOOM BOX entrance before every game!

What might make Commanders fans sigh re Deebo?

While I feel Deebo Samuel brings a lot to the table, some Commanders fans might sigh over concerns about his durability, contract issues, role uncertainty, and inconsistent route running.

Additionally, his tendency to rely on big plays rather than consistent production might be a double-edged sword. If he’s not used properly or has a down year due to injuries,

Washington fans could feel like they invested in a player who isn’t delivering as expected.

Ultimately, while the highs of having Deebo on the roster could be thrilling, there are some potential drawbacks and risks that could lead to disappointment if things don’t fall into place as hoped.

Deebo’s heavy usage as both a wide receiver and running back in San Francisco have led to concerns about him burning out or getting injured. Washington fans might worry that they’ll have to use him in a similar fashion, which could be physically taxing.

If the team leans on Deebo too heavily, it could increase the risk of injury or reduce his effectiveness over time.

Deebo’s game relies heavily on big plays and gaining yards after the catch (YAC).

While that’s extremely exciting and can change a game in an instant, some fans might get frustrated with his inconsistency at times.

If Deebo isn’t given the ball in a way that allows him to break tackles and rack up YAC, his impact can diminish. For a team like Washington, which has struggled with consistency on offense (previously), there could be concerns that Deebo's style might lead to more "boom-or-bust" moments rather than a steady, reliable offensive weapon for Jayden Daniels.

It is well documented that Deebo thrived in Kyle Shanahan’s creative system with the 49ers, where he was used in unique ways to maximize his skill set. I do feel that Washington will need to adjust their offense to fit to Deebo’s strengths (rather than the other way round) which could take time. If the offensive system isn’t tailored to his versatility, there could be frustration if he’s not used to his full potential, or if his strengths as a runner and playmaker don’t mesh with the offensive play-calling.

Finally, Deebo has been vocal about his desire for a new contract and even asked for a trade in the past. Washington fans may be wary of potentially dealing with similar contract disputes down the road, especially if Deebo’s usage doesn’t align with his expectations or he feels underappreciated in his new environment: (however I’m sure that it will be fine).
