Adam Peters is starting to cook.
Today the Washington Commanders traded with the New Orleans Saints to acquire the services of x4 pro-bowler CB Marshon Lattimore.
The cost: 2025 picks in the third and fourth round and a sixth rounder. The third was acquired from the trade of Jahan Dotson to the Eagles, with the sixth acquired in a previous trade this summer for defensive tackle John Ridgeway III.
Here at UKHTTC, founder Christian Burt posed some immediate reaction questions to @WhoDatInTheUK Saints writer for @JoinTheHuddleUK
UKHTTC: It seems quite the overhaul in New Orleans with the firing of Head Coach Dennis Allen. Were you surprised by the trade of Lattimore to the Commanders given his reasonable salary cap?
Absolutely not to be honest.
The Saints have signified they are going into rebuild mode with Dennis Allen being fired. Marshon was the most valuable target on the team for a team who is ready to win now.
And despite the team’s massive injury issues, the DB room is incredibly deep. Many fans did not like Dennis Allen, but that man could find and develop DB’s like no one else!
Lattimore has missed a number of games for the Saints over the last few seasons with injuries. A cause for concern for Commanders fans?
A few have referred to Lattimore as “injury-prone” lately. I don’t think this is entirely accurate. If you look at the nature of his injuries, they don’t fall in line with that narrative - for example his lacerated kidney and two broken ribs last year.
The Saints do seem to have an unusually high number of soft tissue injuries in recent times, and you have to wonder if maybe there’s something else going on. It’s no secret that DA had lost the Saints locker room in the end. Shon is coming off a hamstring injury that sidelined him in week 9 but I have little doubt he will be ready to go at full speed in no time.
Give an insight into the playing style and character of Lattimore
Lattimore is a dawg! He came out of the Saints’ fabled 2017 draft class alongside Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara.
You can look at his stats recently and say he has few interceptions or few solo tackles. The reality is that QB’s avoid throwing towards him.
At his best he’s a true lockdown corner. We’ll have to see if he regains some of that notoriety. He’s also a fierce competitor. His rivalry with the Buccaneers’ Mike Evans repeatedly produced fireworks and he will never back down.
The NFC East is a division with a number of high-calibre WRs – Cee Cee Lamb, AJ Brown and Malik Nabers to name but a few. Can Lattimore run with guys as a true CB1?
Unquestionably.
He is 28 years old and isn’t going to set any 40-yard records. But Marshon is incredibly intelligent. He also has a lot to prove.
He still believes he’s in the elite range of CB’s and I can’t disagree. The last few years have been rough in New Orleans since the retirement of Drew Brees.
Shon’s story isn’t over, and I think he’s going to be a great addition for Washington. I’ll be watching the team closely, and not just because I have a soft spot for your star LSU QB #GeauxTigers!
Bonus non-trade question! How is Chase Young doing in New Orleans?
Some optimists had CY99 down for DPOY.
At the very least, most of us had him down as making a huge impact in New Orleans. It really hasn’t worked out that way yet. He’s pressuring QB’s but not consistently managing to finish.
The talent is clearly there, and I really want him to succeed but I don’t see another year in the Crescent City unless things change quickly. I would not have been surprised to see the Saints trade him before the deadline, but it looks like we’ve done enough for one day.
Steve, where can people find you for New Orleans content?
You can find me on X @WhoDatInTheUK and writing for @JoinTheHuddleUK
Alternatively, you can often find me in one of the many great dive bars in New Orleans! It’s my favourite place in the world and I can never stop going back - although sadly not for the Commanders game this season.
